TOPIC: Ideas - The Next Chapter: From Entrepreneurial Mouthpiece To Entrepreneur

Ideas is a magazine about creativity and creative makers and is aimed at everyone who wants to put their stamp on anything from their home to their business. But for the publishers, life is not exactly a bed of roses. Not financially at least.

For the beauty advertisers, they simply don’t do enough of it, for fashion – they do nothing and for health, they tend to look at the therapeutic benefits of their content rather than the potions and pills you might want to pile into your shopping basket. As for the food industry, everybody does it.

The result is a magazine that, despite being one of the highest circulating titles in the country, simply does not make financial sense.

And this is where Ideas Magazines’ story ended and Terena and her team's journey as entrepreneurs began.

Ironically for a print magazine, it was social media that gave them the nudge to carry on, a digital crowd sourcing platform that became the centre of their marketing campaign and direct contact with their readers that gave them the steam it took to keep going.

As the person at the helm of this new adventure, Terena had to learn how to negotiate – a very different story when you suddenly don’t have a big corporate behind you. And to delegate without staff to delegate to. They needed to venture into a world without office space, without IT and without a finance department. And in between they needed to bring out a rejuvenated product that could warrant an almost 100% price increase. This is the Ideas Magazine’s story so far.

In this talk Terena will share more of her entrepreneurial journey and what she has learnt.

ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER:
Terena le Roux, Owner & Editor of Ideas Magazine. With a BA Communications degree in hand, Terena's career started as a newspaper journalist at Beeld in Johannesburg in the mid-80’s. Seven years down the line she became the first full time researcher on MNet’s Carte Blanche with then producer Pieter Cilliers. A few years later she worked with him again, this time as assistant producer on MNet’s Première. This marked the end of Terenas’ news career as she then moved on to become Fashion Editor at rooi rose for 3 years. Cape Town called and Terena moved here as a freelance stylist for several magazines – one of them being Woman’s Value. Her freelance position there changed to fashion and beauty editor, then assistant editor and finally, when the Afrikaans edition, DIT, launched, as editor of both Woman’s Value and DIT.

In her third year as editor she splurged the entire marketing budget on buying a house in Mowbray and giving it a room by room makeover as part of a massive reader competition in which the house was the prize. A dominee from Germiston won the prize and the competiton highlighted a glaring gap in the market and the opportunity to launch a brand-new magazine – Tuis. After launching Tuis with the then Woman’s Value team, Terena handed the reigns over to a new editor and became first editorial director and later publisher of both the brands.

It was during this time that they rebranded Woman’s Value and Dit to Ideas and Idees. Editorial was however Terenas’ first love and in 2009, when the opportunity arose, she took over as editor of Ideas and Idees – a job she held until the magazine was closed end of 2016.

So, after 27 years of tough print training, Terena is now editor, publisher, owner of Idees and Ideas – and the entrepreneur she always longed to be. www.facebook.com/ideasmag.
