Helderberg Networking Event: 07 September

07 Sept 2017 XWHB

TOPIC: Let Your Genes Do the Talking

What is it actually, that makes you a woman?

Are we programmed differently to men?

Do we have the programming to be entrepreneurs?

Join Dr Renate Rebello (PhD) for a short and humorous trip into the world of genetics and discover things about yourself you might not have known.

While genetics is an integral part of our lives – in the form of technology (with optimised medical treatment, food-testing, forensic DNA analysis, among others), it also determines our health and behaviour.

That includes the behaviour of the entrepreneur (risk-taking, extended communication, flexibility, etc.), as well as that of the client (impulsivity, compulsiveness, susceptibility, etc).

Renate will explore some of these aspects, and ways to use this information, when dealing with that new, prospective client walks through the door.

ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER:
Dr Renate Rebello (PhD): Learning Designer & Facilitator. Curious about Genetics since childhood, because of the amazing resemblances among her family members (some good, other not), Renate followed a career path in medical genetics (involving diagnostic work, and subsequently, DNA-based research). Following her PhD studies at Imperial College of Science & Technology in London, UK (1997), she took up a position as a senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University. There she added teaching to her skill set and discovered a real passion for it.

She also managed an international research team which focussed on pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure. In 2009, she resigned from to pursue this interest in teaching. She has since, provided consultation to various universities, government agencies and private companies. This has also allowed her to explore inter-disciplinary options. She is currently teaching a Master’s course in Forensic Law, and designing a university-level short course in DNA Forensics for law practitioners, while performing on-line assessment for a business management & development company. Renate is about to launch “The Curiosity Club”, which is a series of informal “edu-tainment” sessions, for those individuals who want to keep their minds alert and active.

She is also a shareholder and director of a management company and lives in Somerset West with her husband, two children and a Jack-Russell dog.
