TOPIC: Holding the Tension Of Opposites: Managing the Polarities In Business and In Life

Have you ever noticed that just when you think you may have found a solution to a problem another problem emerges?

Then when you fix that problem, you find yourself back at square one and you have to confront the original issue?

Well, perhaps you have been grappling with a problem that could never be solved in the first place. You may have been dealing with a dilemma or a "polarity" that simply needed to be managed! Polarities are ongoing, chronic issues that are unavoidable and unsolvable.

As examples think of tension between:
• change and stability
• challenge and support
• lead and empower
• structure and flexibility
• plan and execute
• individual and team
• work life and home life

Attempting to address these types of problems with traditional problem-solving skills only makes things worse. And since these polarities are inescapable, every individual, team, organization, business and nation has to find a way to manage it. Polarity Management is a framework developed by Dr Barry Johnson and it stresses the importance of recognising that some situations don't have solutions -- and that life doesn't always have to be either/or.

In this talk Emi will introduce you to Johnson’s model and will give you an opportunity to reflect on polarities in your own life and business in order to deal with increasingly high levels of complexity, change, conflict and diversity.

She will also discuss ways to:
• Distinguish problems to solve from polarities to manage
• Develop practical ways to manage these polarities for enhanced effectiveness.
