TOPIC: Clemengold: The Story of a Naartjie with Personality and a Brand Dream Come True
Today when you say the name Clemengold, there is no doubt that you are talking about that very special naartjie that is so prominent in the media and in a specific retail food outlet.
The dream of branding this naartjie started with a risky involvement in a citrus nursery under quarantine in Letsitele.
Since that day in 1989 much has happened and Abraham van Rooyen’s vision, his philosophy of ‘hard on standards, soft on people’ combined with several squirts of innovation and determination ... and a bit of luck, has turned this dream into an international branding success story.
Abraham who lives and breathes the Clemengold brand, will share just how far you have to go to establish a brand that people talk about and, most importantly, buy, love and lust after.
ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER:
Abraham van Rooyen, CEO of ANB Investments (Pty) Ltd, owner of the Du Roi and Indigo group of companies, Founder of Du Roi Citrus Nursery, Du Roi Tissue culture Laboratory, Du Roi IPM (Insectary breeding insects for integrated pest management) and various new startup businesses in the innovative agriculture sector.
Abraham was born and bred in Letsitele; obtained a BSc (AGRIC) degree in Horticulture from the University of Pretoria in 1984 and entered the citrus world as extension officer for what was then Outspan in Nelspruit. He entered the private sector as enthomology manager at Crocodile Valley Estates where he was responsible for managing 800ha citrus.
The owners of the Kathnic Nursery approached him in 1989 to work with them and through the successful lifting of the nursery out of a prolonged period of disease quarantine, Abraham gained a 50% share in that business. In 1990, Abraham bought his partners out and changed the company name to Du Roi Nursery – a business which formed the corner stone of what we now know as ANB Investments.
ANB Investments (Pty) Ltd is the South African registered holding company of a diverse group of agricultural companies that developed individually until 2008, when it amalgamated as one operating group, known as the ANB Group. ANB Investments and its subsidiaries serve the complete citrus value chain, including products and services related to establishing intellectual property (focusing on citrus and other fruit types), laboratory facilities, nurseries, farming and packing, fruit marketing and branding activities. Most of our businesses hold leading market positions.
ANB owns the ClemenGold brand standard which has been launched in seven international markets and much energy, time and other resources are employed to build the brand in these markets. In South Africa our fruit are exclusively available in Woolworths. This strategy is supported by a focussed plan where selected producers, from countries like Peru, Chile, Australia, Marocco, Turkey and Spain form part of a sustainable suppliers‘ network, providing ClemenGold branded products to selected retailers. www.clemengold.com
