Durbanville Networking Event: 20 September

20 September 2018 XWDV NEW

TOPIC: The Fear Factor

Research shows that fear of failure is the biggest concern for all entrepreneurs. It also shows that women fear it more than men. So, it seems that the biggest barrier between a female entrepreneur and her path to success is not necessarily external factors like funding or the lack of a support network, but the fear she creates in her own mind. Our fearful and self-doubting thoughts create feelings of inferiority; making us hesitant to act and allowing other people to question us.

Fear has been with us for centuries. It served an important function in the past; ensuring our survival as a species when it helped us to monitor and respond to threats. Today our primal need to avoid pain can hinder us in being successful entrepreneurs, because even though we are not challenged by physical threats as much as in the past, psychological threats elicit the same kind of response. Because of fear we avoid challenging situations, we procrastinate on tasks we don’t feel confident about and we struggle to bounce back from disappointments.

In order to really connect with our self and our true ambition, it’s crucial to understand the role fear plays in our daily life. We need to learn to overcome our natural impulse to stay where it is safe and choose to step outside our comfort zone.
