Xtraordinary Woman of the Month - Heloise Engelbrecht

Heloise Engelbrecht - Director and Founder of Yosef Dream Foundation

Heloise EngelbrechtHeloise is the Director and Founder of Yosef Dream Foundation, an NPC which was registered in 2017. Yosef Dream Foundation is a Non-Profit entity with it's motto-Dare to Dream. Core to its vision is Caring, Sharing Uplifting and Empowering.

She has a certificate in Human Resource Management and has been working since the age of 17 in various sectors.

She wishes to use the NPC as a platform to instil skills, values and dignity in underprivileged communities. Her most valued accomplishment is being a mother and an inspiration to her two children.

Please tell us a little more about yourself and your journey thus far.

I am a 36-year-old single mom with two children. I was born in Elsies River, Cape Town. As a child I was raised in my grandma's house with my mom, and grandma playing a vital role in my upbringing. We did not have much, but we had family. All around in the community I saw many single parent households or children being raised by their grandparents. So, this was a community in distress with families struggling financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually. So, the desire to help, to make a change, to bring hope to the hopeless was ignited in the midst of a dysfunctional environment.

In 2010 after a motor vehicle accident the doctors told me I would now have to live my life as a quadriplegic. At the age of 27, with a 3-year old boy and an 8-month old daughter; this was the most devastating news. My children became my reason for living and fighting. Little did I know that it would be a two-year medical, emotional and spiritual battle for my life.

I had two choices, to give up or to fight. I chose the latter and have grown from strength to strength.

How did your Company come about?

I always had a passion for giving and the need to see change happen in disadvantaged communities. I woke up one day in 2016 with the words 'Dare to dream' and that propelled me to launch the NPC Yosef Dream Foundation.

You are busy with some very interesting initiatives. Please tell us a little more about that.

In 2017, we wanted to give back to the community I was raised in and so our very first project was a teacher’s appreciation lunch for the staff at Clarke Primary in Clarke's Estate, Elsies River. During the June school holidays, we handed out food packs to some 200 kids. At Kraaifontein old age home we gave care packs. We then ended 2017, with what is now our annual Happy Hearts Event entertaining about 350 children with games, gave each child a meal as well as a gift and party packets - just showing love.

In 2018 we revamped the unused school library of Clarke Primary school to encourage learners to read in a safe environment. Then we had a soup kitchen at Scotsdene Sports and Recreation Centre and held our Happy Hearts event for 250 children there as well. Care packs were handed out to the aged at Kraaifontein Old age homes.

This year 2019, our very first project will be to assist a creche for disabled children in Delft. Our aim is to also host Hygiene Workshops for teens at the community centre. To assist us with our projects we are busy networking with health professionals like occupational therapists, counsellors and social workers.

Time is a precious commodity, so our team will be spending time with the people in these institutions and doing activities with them.

What is it that you are passionate about?

God and the fulfilment of His purpose and grace in my life and other people's lives.

What is your personal motto?

Never, never, never give up!

Who or What has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

God because of his unmerited favour.
My maternal grandmother who taught me to trust in God and persevere when life gets tough.
My mother taught me sacrificial love as she gave up everything to assist me after a near fatal accident.

What advice would you give a woman wanting to follow her dreams?

Don't allow people to discourage you, you are never too old or too young to follow your dreams.

Put practical steps in place and have a plan to help you achieve the dream.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Be bold, do not be intimidated by your circumstances, or what other people say or think about you.

You are good enough! Nothing is impossible if you believe.

Who or what is your inspiration and why?

My children inspire me to face the challenges of each day and persevere in that my daughter embodies boldness and a zest for life whereas my son displays a quiet strength and leadership despite our current situation.

Your favourite daily affirmation:

This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. (Ps 118:24)

Hope which is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what they see, but we hope for what we do not see, and we wait for it patiently. (Rom 8:24-25)
